Dear ,
Thanks for signing up to the Backup Exec FAQ newsletter.
Recent Backup Exec Developments
So far this year there have been two hotfixes. Hotfix 32 addresses an upgrade issue from 10d, and a memory bug affecting CASO installations. There's also support for an additional NDMP platform. Hotfix 33 affects Lotus Notes backups. Note that both of these hotfixes are for 11d build 7170 only, with Service Pack 2 installed. This is the clearest sign to date that Symantec would rather not have any users still on build 6235.
The biggest news though is probably the announcement of Backup Exec 12d. Well, not a product announcement as you'd expect from the marketing department, but rather a casual mention in a support technote that it's coming out on 18th February 2008. The End of Life Notice is at http://ftp.support.veritas.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_for_WindowsNT/295530.pdf
Hopefully there will be lots of nice, useful, reliable features in 12d. Support for Windows 2008 should hopefully be included when, or soon after, Windows 2008 is released. There's an indication that Symantec have been working with it in the technote at http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/295548.htm, which refers to an issue on both Windows 2003 and 2008. Hopefully support will come out soon enough for Symantec to avoid the criticism they got for lack of initial support for Exchange 2007 and Sharepoint 2007.
Hint Of The Month
If you wish to be eligible for an upgrade to 12d when it's released, make sure you have an up-to-date support agreement.
