Backup Exec FAQ

So you want to restore a file or two? Before starting anything, get some information. Do you know:

• What the files are called?
• Where the files should be located?
• What backup media you have a backup of the files on?

If you know the answer to the third question, then you can skip ahead. If you know which files need to be restored, but you don't know which media you need to restore from, you can either browse for the file, or use the Search Catalogs feature.

To browse for the file:

1. Click Restore
2. Ensure that in the View by box, Resource is selected
3. Expand the server and resource where the files are located
4. Browse through the media, folders and files to find the files you want
5. Select the files and folders you wish to restore
   

To restore the files:

1. Ensure you have the files you wish to restore selected
2. If you wish to restore using a specific device, click Devices and choose the appropriate device
3. If you wish to restore the files to a different location, click File Redirection, click the Redirect file sets box and choose where you want to restore to. If some of the files you wish to restore may be in use, then it may be a good idea to redirect the file set, then copy the files to the correct location
4. Click General. If you want to restore the files from the backup media, even if they have been updated, then select Restore over existing files
5. Click Run Now
6. If the correct media is not already in the drive, you will be prompted to insert it.

What if you wish to restore from a specific media, but it's not listed in the selection list? In this case, it may be that the catalog file has been purged. In this case you need to re-catalog the media, by right-clicking it in the Media window and selecting Catalog. To understand why you might need to do this, see What are catalogs?
