Backing up Backup Exec's database

Backup Exec stores its configuration data in a Microsoft MSDE (or SQL) database. What's the best way to back this up?

Contrary to some belief, there's no need to have the SQL Agent license for Backup Exec's database. Instead, if you have database maintenance enabled (and you should!), then during the maintenance process, a database backup file (BEDB.bak) is created. There is a specific option to enable this on Backup Exec 11d. Because this is just a normal file, it will be included in the backup of your Backup Exec server (you are backing your media server up, aren't you?). In the event of a disaster recovery, Backup Exec automatically takes care of restoring the BEDB file to the database. All without an SQL Agent license.
